Review: Urban Decay Cannonball Ultra Waterproof Mascara

Hello lovelies! We have missed writing you, but we’re happy to say that we at least have some good excuses. The lazy days of summer have been anything but for us nerds. Northern nerd has been busy finishing some big projects on her house, and I just bought a house of my own…with a pool! Which brings me to today’s topic: waterproof mascara.

Having a pool in my backyard means that my weekends have been split between running errands for house stuff (it never ends) and hanging in the pool. I don’t always wear much makeup on the weekends, but mascara is always a MUST. Taking my regular stuff off a couple of times a day started taking a toll on my lashes. So, I set out to find a good waterproof mascara that I could put on once and forget.

After much research, I narrowed down my options to Urban Decay’s Cannonball ($20) and Dior’s Diorshow Iconic Waterproof Mascara ($28.50). Both Sephora and Ulta were out of Cannonball. So I picked up the Dior instead.

Big mistake. I wore it for a pool party for the first time, and half an hour into splashing around with my friends, that stuff flaked EVERYWHERE. Returned.

It took some serious online recon to find a tube of Cannonball. The usual suspects, the Urban Decay website, Ulta and Sephora (in stores and online) were all out of stock. After finding it on Nordstrom’s website, I promptly ordered a tube and eagerly awaited its arrival.

Cannonball TestIt arrived just before the weekend, and I immediately put it to the test. Given that the name of the mascara is Cannonball—and I firmly believe that a cannonball is the only proper way to enter a pool—I did what came natural: slapped it on my lashes, took a before selfie, did the cannonball, and then took an after selfie.

The verdict? This stuff stayed ON!

I even hopped out and dove in head first to see if the force of the water on my face would make a difference, and it didn’t budge. I did the usual let-me-touch-my-lashes-test after the dive, and there was nary a flake on my finger.

After extensively testing it for the last few weekends, here’s what I love—and don’t love—about this waterproof mascara.

What I love: The fact that it stayed on throughout an afternoon of swimming, jumping and splashing around says a lot about the waterproof-ness of this mascara. I love that I can put it on and not have to worry about it melting or flaking away. If you’re like me and like to be active in the pool while staying a little glam, this is the mascara for you!

What I don’t love: It took a few coats to get the look I wanted on my lashes. It doesn’t lengthen, volumize or curl lashes. However, beggars can’t be choosers, and my top criteria was for it to stay on in the pool. Also, like any waterproof mascara, this one was a little hard to take off at night, even using a waterproof makeup remover. Even so, this one is a keeper.

Where to buy: As I mentioned earlier, finding it was a bit difficult. Technically, it is carried by UrbanDecay.com, Sephora (online and in stores), Ulta (online and in stores), Nordstrom.com and Macys.com, but only Nordstrom.com had it in stock. Unfortunately, all of the above are out of stock right now, but the Urban Decay website says it has an approximate ship date of September 19.

While you wait for it to come back in, glam out by the pool to this new playlist:
